Blue Garden ist nicht einfach ein Titel, der sich irgendwie gut anfühlt, gut anhört, gut merken lässt. Er ziert das neue Album von Anton Mangold. Und: er hat viel zu tun mit der Musik des Würzburger Jazz-Saxofonisten und Flötisten (der bei anderen Gelegenheiten auch als Harfenist in Erscheinung tritt). Denn der mehrfach prämierte Virtuose vergleicht das Arrangieren seiner verschiedenen Einflüsse mit dem Gärtnern, mit dem Anlegen, Umtopfen und Kombinieren von Pflanzen aller Gattungen. Die erfahren von ihm viel Zuwendung und Pflege, treiben in immer neuen Farbkompositionen und Formen neben- und miteinander aus. Übrigens: auch ein wenig Wildwuchs ist durchaus erlaubt.
Blue Garden – die erste Veröffentlichung auf Rebecca Treschers Label Treasure Records – macht beim Zuhören das, was das Betrachten von Beeten und rankender Natur mit der Seele anstellt: das Album beruhigt und belebt gleichzeitig, ist Trost und Freude. Und es lässt einen Mann aufblühen, der für viele Kritiker längst zu den besten und kreativsten Jazzmusikern Europas zählt. Dieser Anton Mangold brilliert, egal ob er Flöte, Altflöte, Sopran- oder Altsaxofon spielt. Er ist ein umwerfender Fabulierer, einer, der einem mit seiner frappierenden Wendigkeit und Improvisationskunst den Atem nimmt.
Was gleich in den ersten Minuten von Blue Garden auffällt, ist die positive Aura, die die Musik ausstrahlt. Selbst in den intensivsten Passagen ist eine Leichtigkeit und Unbeschwertheit zu spüren, die lange nachhallt. Woher das kommt? Der Austausch mit dem Pianisten Felix Schneider-Restschikow , dem Bassisten Theodor Spannagel , dem Schlagzeuger Zhitong Xu dem Vibrafonisten Roland Neffe und der Sängerin Carolina Attoumani Díaz wirkt so, als würden die Sechs auf fast telepathische Weise miteinander kommunizieren.
Gemeinsam bewegen sie sich scheinbar mühelos auf den durchaus komplex angelegten harmonischen und rhythmischen Pfaden, die zwischen den Beeten hindurch oder über sie hinweg führen. Wie sehr dieses Kollektiv aufeinander abgestimmt ist, lässt sich allein schon erahnen, wenn eine poetische Passage ohne Ansatz in einem treibenden Swing-Beat mündet. Doch auch viele andere, liebevoll geordnete Details und Überraschungen künden vom fast vergleichslosen Team Spirit – dieser prachtvolle Blue Garden ist perfekt, ist gemeinschaftlich angelegt.

Blue Garden is not just a title that feels good, sounds good, and is easy to remember. It is the title of Anton Mangold’s new album, which says a lot about the music of this versatile jazz musician from Würzburg.
